Sure thing, here we go:
Okay, so Chrono Trigger. Classic game, right? If you’ve never played it, you might want to find a time machine yourself. One of its big names, Yuji Horii — the legend, really — popped up in Naples (Italy? Pizza? No idea why that mattered, but it did) and started, well, musing aloud about rebooting this old gem. Fans, predictably, lost their minds. And I get it, who wouldn’t want a shiny version of something that’s etched into gaming history?
Right, so Chrono Trigger dropped on the SNES back in ’95. Talk about a blast from the past. Imagine this: it was born from what’s now known as the "Dream Team." This crew had Horii himself, the Final Fantasy guru Hironobu Sakaguchi, and Akira Toriyama (yep, the Dragon Ball dude). Together they cooked up this epic, time-hopping saga. You had Crono, Marle, Lucca — not your usual suspects, and they were on this wild quest through time to stop the apocalypse.
The gameplay? Turn-based battles that didn’t make you want to throw the controller. And, oh man, that soundtrack — Yasunori Mitsuda, ring a bell? There’s some Uematsu in there too, for good measure. It was all about multiple endings and secret twists. Fun times, I swear.
Anyway — back to the present, or the future maybe? At least a potential one? — rumors were flying around, but apparently, it was all a big misunderstanding. Something about translation mix-ups. Classic. Yet, it turns out Horii did indeed start thinking about it (again, fans went nuts) after he’s seen Square Enix do some magic with their HD-2D revamps like Dragon Quest 3.
Now, don’t get too excited. Square Enix hasn’t exactly confirmed anything yet. But I mean, 2025 is the big 3-0 for the game. If they were ever gonna do something, now’s probably as good a time as any. Horii’s got his hands full, though, with Dragon Quest titles lined up. Super busy dude. Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D are on the horizon, plus the mysterious Dragon Quest 12, which sounds like it’s being leaked about as fast as molasses in winter.
So yeah, Chrono Trigger, 30 years and still kickin’. Will a revamped version make its way to consoles near you? Who knows, really. Stay tuned, keep dreaming, and maybe, just maybe, the stars will align.
