Okay, so there’s this wild new look at Ghost of Yōtei. Sucker Punch Productions spilled the beans during Sony’s big show-and-tell — all about their PS5 game. Anyway, they threw a bunch of info at us about Atsu, her weapons, and a mix of fresh and familiar ways to experience the game.
Remember Ghost of Tsushima’s Kurosawa Mode? Such a cool nod to Akira Kurosawa — he made those epic samurai films like Seven Samurai. It’s back in Ghost of Yōtei, with its black and white drama, film fuzziness, and Japanese dialogue. Yeah, the lip-syncing too, if that matters.
Oh, then there’s this thing called Takashi Miike Mode — the camera’s right up in the action, more blood, more mud. Classic Miike, I guess. Folks might know him from 13 Assassins. Plus, they teamed up with Shinichirō Watanabe from Samurai Champloo. That mode’s got lo-fi beats — because who doesn’t need chilled-out tunes while seeking vengeance?
The dive into the game? Yeah, they spotlighted Atsu going nuts with new toys like dual katanas, ōdachi, and kusarigama. She can switch mid-fight, disarm foes — or end up disarmed. I was supposed to focus on her wild journey, but oh well. Exploration’s big too; follow animals to secret spots, kinda like Tsushima but with more mystery hunts. Think Elden Ring — just travel to random cool spots and see what surprises pop up.
Oh, and the special edition stuff — they got these Ghost of Yōtei-themed consoles, all jazzed up with Mount Yōtei images, and the controllers have Atsu on them. Not that I’d buy all that extra stuff, but it’s there.
This isn’t a direct Tsushima sequel, but hey, same vibe. It’s set 300 years later in Ezo — which everyone now calls Hokkaido. Atsu’s story is one of revenge — typical samurai, right? She’s out for the Yōtei Six who wiped out her family. Lots of action as she takes down targets and earns her Ghost stripes. More choices in how you play — like, pick the order to eliminate the Yōtei Six. It feels like you’re driving the story, more so than before.
Anyway, that’s the gist. If it sounds messy, well, that’s me trying to keep up with all the hype.
