[Nintendo Switch] Review: Everhood 2

Foreign Gnomes has done it again with Everhood 2, inviting players back into this eccentric universe for another round of quirky fun. I never imagined a sequel like this would come, but it turns out it’s the follow-up we had no idea we were missing. Building on the creativity of the original Everhood, this game goes above and beyond with its enhancements. The influence of Undertale is still present, just as it was in the first game, but it’s a charming homage rather than a drawback. I had the pleasure of reviewing the initial Everhood on Nintendo’s system back in 2021, so diving into this sequel felt like a homecoming.

Remember, the choices you make in Everhood 2 significantly affect your journey’s trajectory. Right out of the gate, you’re faced with the question of what you enjoy most in games. Is it the Story, Battles and Challenges, Unique Experiences, or just the Funny Stuff that reels you in? Following this, you’ll decide how tough you like your challenges with options spanning from Story Mode to Hard. Your decision here determines the difficulty level you’ll tackle.

Another interesting question you’ll encounter is whether you talk to every character in a room. Options include Yes, No, or I Don’t Know, stirring up the quiz’s pace with a touch more personality. As you progress, these questions become increasingly personal, and at the end of it, they’ll declare your soul’s color.

When it comes to gameplay, moving your character involves the left analog stick or D-Pad, interacting is managed with the A button, and pressing X will bring up the menu so you can view your loot and usable items. You can switch between characters quickly by using the L and R buttons. If you’re new to Everhood, brace yourself—this sequel perpetuates the distinct battle style from the first game.

Think rhythm game meets RPG; that’s what you get. It’s all about syncing with each tune and dodging attacks while seizing chances to strike back. You’ll dodge left and right with the stick or D-Pad, leap with the B button or upward motion, and absorb attacks with ZR or A. To retaliate, use ZL or Y.

A new twist in Everhood 2 lets you hold down ZR or A to absorb multiple notes in succession. Each absorbed note boosts your attack power, but be warned: getting hit wipes your accumulated energy. Stick to absorbing same-colored notes to maximize your abilities without interference from barrier notes, which can block your attacks. Switch weapons using L and R buttons to find the best tool for battle.

In a nod to old-school classics like Earthbound, you’ll also confront enemies on the overworld. Victory yields experience points to gradually boost your stats. Open treasure chests for bonus experience, level up for more HP and attack strength, and explore new cosmetic options to customize your character.

The quirky Everhood 2 unexpectedly landed, delighting with enhanced features and nods to its Undertale-inspired roots. Your in-game choices shape your path, and the journey is filled with explorations across various realities, guided by Raven to discover your full potential. Slay dragons to claim your Soul Weapon and collect Power Gems to further enhance your prowess—just be prepared for the cost of upgrades as you move forward.

Everhood 2 is geared up to launch on the Nintendo Switch soon, priced at $20.00. It’s more than worth the investment for those ready to immerse themselves once again in this unique world of chaos and creativity.
